I had innitially gotten the idea after watching a video about kinetic sculptures and got inspired to make one. After some research, I not find how the sculptures could move using only kinetic energy and decided to make one that used a motor to spin instead. I based the design off Zinnia.
First, I designed the parts in Fusion360.
Then I milled it out the main fixtures, the cover, the holder and the inner gear using the CNC machine, the process is found here.
I then made the PCB needed for this. The process is found here.
Then I made the code for it. The process is found here.
I also 3D printed out the motor holder, 3 gears, motor and fixture fitting. The gears were designed to rotate in the opposite direction using the interplanetary gear design that I found here.
The design for the motor holder shown below.
The 3D printed parts
I added bearings into the cover.
I then drilled 4 holes onto the cover for the potentiometer, DC socket and to hold the motor holder in place.
Finally, I assembled it togther and this is the end product.
Unfortunately, The bottom fixture was not abke to spin when the power is plugged in. However, the top fixture was able to spin. The lecterur told me that its probably due to the gears not lining up perfectly. I had used the interplanetary gear design to make the bottom fixture spin the opposite direction but apparently there was supposed to be a formula for the gears. My gears were a bit too loose. To add on, I took my motor holder off the 3D printer build plate too early and warped the feet of it. Overall, I think this project was quite a success. The code and circuit worked perfectly but the design was the only issue affecting the project.
